Ara Pacis Museum

This striking modern museum houses the remarkably preserved Ara Pacis Augustae, a marble altar commissioned by the Roman Senate in 13 B.C. to celebrate Emperor Augustus's safe return from Spain and Gaul. The glass and travertine building itself, designed by American architect Richard Meier, offers a beautiful contrast between contemporary architecture and ancient Roman craftsmanship. Walking around the intricately carved relief panels depicting Augustus and his family, you'll feel transported to the height of the Roman Empire.
