Rome, Italy

This remarkably preserved 2nd-century marketplace reveals how Romans shopped and conducted business over 1,900 years ago, with multiple levels of shops and corridors carved into the hillside. Wander through ancient stone corridors, peer into tiny shop windows where merchants once sold everything from wine to silk, and climb to the upper terraces for unexpected views across the Imperial Fora. The travertine and brick structures showcase masterful Roman engineering that still impresses visitors who can almost hear the echoes of merchants haggling in Latin.
