Essential Latvian Phrases
Connect with locals and navigate the Baltics with confidence
Why Learn Latvian?
While many younger Latvians speak English, especially in Riga, learning basic Latvian phrases shows respect for the local culture and can open doors to more authentic experiences. Latvian is one of only two surviving Baltic languages (along with Lithuanian), making it a unique linguistic treasure.
Latvian uses the Latin alphabet with some additional diacritical marks, making it more accessible to English speakers than languages with different scripts. The pronunciation is relatively straightforward once you understand the basics.

Cultural Context
Latvians appreciate when visitors make an effort to speak their language, even if it's just basic phrases. The country regained independence relatively recently (1991), so the Latvian language holds special cultural significance as a symbol of national identity.
When visiting Latvia, remember that older generations might be more comfortable with Russian than English, while younger people often speak excellent English. However, starting any conversation with a Latvian greeting will always be well-received.
Practice Tips
Start Small: Focus on greetings and "thank you" first - these will get you far and are used constantly.
Listen Carefully: Latvian pronunciation is quite consistent, so listening to how locals say words will help you improve quickly.
Don't Be Afraid: Latvians are patient and encouraging when foreigners attempt their language. Mistakes are part of learning!
Use Apps: Download offline translation apps for backup, but try speaking first before resorting to technology.
Learning even basic Latvian phrases will enrich your travel experience and create connections with locals that go beyond typical tourist interactions. For more detailed information about Latvian culture and customs, check out our Latvia etiquette guide.
